Needless to say, long-distance moves require
a bit more preparation than do local ones. If you are moving out-of-town, you
can contact the new Chamber of Commerce for information and subscribe to the
local paper from your new community to become familiar with local news.
Of course you will be working to find a home
in your new location. Check with your accountant and employer if your move is
work related to see what expenses you will incur and which will be reimbursed
or are tax deductible.
Collect medical records to take with you, and
don’t forget to get veterinarian histories too; arrange to close existing bank
accounts and reopen them in the new location;’ settle any outstanding local
accounts; empty your safety deposit box; and return any outstanding rentals—library
books, videos, etc.
